A DAY OF TWO HALVES AGAINST SHEFFIELD

Both our U14 and U16 league teams were in action on Saturday 11th October when they played their home league fixtures against Sheffield.

Under 14's

The U14 age group played first with just eight players (from a possible thirteen) on the bench.  It was a tough-fought match, before Sedgefield pulled away to a deciding lead in the final quarter. After a slow start from both sides, with just one goal from India separating the teams in the first quarter, Sedgefield took a tentative lead.

Early in the second quarter, the home side extended their lead, with a goal from Harry, followed by two for the opposition. India scored again to re take the lead at the end of the quarter, making it 3-2 just before half time.

Quarter three saw Sedgefield extend their lead, with goals from Fynn, India and Leo adding to the tally, plus a penalty saved by goalkeeper Dylan, handing them the momentum going into the final quarter at 6-2 up, following some solid defensive play from Kara, working hard at centre back.

More goals followed after the re-start, three in total for Fynn, another each for India and Harry, plus good game play and assists from Arwen and Jasper. In a back-and-forth game, visitors Sheffield scored another two goals, bringing in the final score at 11-4 and a decisive home win for Sedgefield. MVP: Harry Cheetham

Under 16's

In contrast, the U16s fielded a full squad of 13 players and a full bench to choose from, some of whom had transitioned across from the U14 team.

The first quarter saw plenty of action and goals, with the hosts ending up 1-4 down, after a quartet of shots on target from the opposition and a goal from Finley Rowntree, along with two excellent penalty saves from Bram Henderson.

After the break, the teams were more evenly matched, following goals from Thomas and Fynn. Another goal for Sheffield, saw the half time score at 3-5 with the visitors marginally ahead. With both goalkeepers able to double up as strong outfield players, a change at half time saw Bram Henderson come out of goal and let his teammate, Dylan Moss take his turn in the net, ready for the third quarter. India Walsh struck first with a goal, taking the score line to 4-5 and from there the scoring was end-to-end for both teams. Harry and Thomas added to the home team’s tally, taking it to 6-8, with the visitors still edging the lead.

A flurry of goals from both teams and exclusions for Sheffield in the final quarter, saw the momentum with both sides at times. A hattrick of goals for Thomas and a further strike from Charlie, put the team in a great position, but a surge by the visitors, sealed the victory for them, making the score 10-13 in their favour at the final whistle. A great team effort from all at Sedgefield, with Kara in defence at centre back, as well as Arwen, Iesha, Leo and Jasper offering support in the wing and driver positions, making for a close match, which could have gone either way. MVP: Kara Stanton
